Deep in the sewers of Creecreeopolis, the mysterious group readjourns in the same room, where they discuss the news of the morning.
"Is really true?" One of the shadows asked the leader at the end of the table. "Is he actually dead?"
"The reports came in from an Affiliate who was vacationing there." the leader turned to the deputy. "Did you get it all?"
"It's all here." the deputy replied. "There's no doubt that Eggman was killed by that strange woman."
"How did she change?"
"The power of the Eemeralds."
"But it says here that she had no power rings and only one emerald. How did she change?"
"The Master Emerald could have ampliphied the power."
"But it doesn't explain how she did it without the rings."
"Well...I..." The deputy was at a loss.
"I guess it doesn't matter at this point." the leader said. "What I'm worried about is retaliation. The girl couldn't have been that last of them."
"At least it is safe on that new Egg Base." another shaodw suggested. "In fact, the city has recommended that it be used to the city's advantage.
Businesses are already building inside the recently abandoned buildings."
"It's only been three hours since the news came in." Another shadow worriedly pointed out. "Is it really safe?"
"I don't think it matters to the people that are moving in." the leader sighed."Is there any word on the guardian?"
"Hmmm?"
"The guardian of the Floating Island." the leader replied. "Certainly there's something in the paper about what he thought of it."
"Actually..." the deputy looked uncomfortable. "The report says that he's gone."
"Run that by me?"
"Gone...vanished." The table grew silent. "He chased the woman into the Marble Ruins, then there was a flash of light, and when the Affiliate went to look all that was there was the ashes of the woman. No sign of the guardian, or of the guardian's possible fate, there or anywhere else on the island.
He's gone."
"This could be a problem..." The leader motioned for a shadow standing nearby. "You."
"Yes?"
"I want an investigation on the island immediately. Get some of the men from him," the leader pointed to the deputy, "and some of my own and find out
what happened. No matter what."
--------------------------------
"WHAT?!"
"It's true."
"And he was actually not being weird when he told Rotor?"
"Yeah. At least that's what Rotor told me." Tails was packing. "I have to go to...school."
"That is weird." Nathan sat down. "Why send you to school when you're too smart for them?"
"I don't know...but I have a small idea..." Tails looked over to the communicator. It was on a night table. He took it and put it in his backpack.
"But he's never met Haruka or Michiru," Nathan objected. "He certainly couldn't know anything..."
"You never know." Tails zipped up the backpack. "Sonic's a lot smarter than most people want to admit."
"Well," Nathan replied. "Maybe he really is concerned for you. All of the battles have been headline news ever since they started a while ago. And Tails..." Nathan's face became quizzical. "Where are you going?"
"They've started a school...on the Egg Base."
"WHAT?!" Nathan jumped back. "ARE THEY INSANE!!"
"He's dead, Nathan." Nathan's shocked face saw sadness in Tails'. "That must be another reason. With no Eggman there's no reason for me to be a Freedom Fighter."
"Yeah, I guess I get you..." Nathan said. "Hmmm..."
He turned on the TV.
"...nknown." The reporter was on, speaking. "Sources have said that there is absolutely no trace of Knuckles the Echidna on the Floating Island after the unusual battle that has resulted in twenty deaths, one of them being Dr. Eggman's..."
"What!" Tails jumped up. "Knuckles...gone?!"
"Weird." Nathan's eyes were wide.
"Any information is appreciated and welcome. This is Action 7..."
Outside, Manic and Sonia were setting up a sign.
"You must be kidding me, Sonia!" Manic protested. "We can't do two shows! I only like to do one!"
"Too bad." Sonia was clearly annoyed.
"What's with you?"
"Nothing." Sonia replied flatly.
"You're upset that Nathan knows."
"Maybe I am."
"Nathan's a good kid. He won't tell anyone who we are."
"I don't care of he's Jesus Christ! We blew our cover, and we blew it to people we didn't even know!"
"Nathan gave us his word that they won't tell."
"Fine. Fine!" Sonia went in. "But they better not!"
----------------------------------
Michiru looked out the window, clearly worried.
"Haruka."
"Yes?" Haruka was putting on a shirt.
"What will we do?" Michiru looked to her. "Tails' friend seems very cruel."
"I know..." Haruka replied, but her face was strangely cold at the mention of Sonic.
"Haruka? What's wrong?" Michiru looked at her.
"I can't say. But you're right. Tails told us that Sonic was a good, likable person. He's nothing like that. He seems upset, even angry that we're with his friend."
"I know..." Michiru suddenly fell over.
"Michiru?!" Haruka caught her. "Are you all right?!"
"My foot..." Michiru struggled to get up. "It's cramped up..."
"Here." Haruka carried Michiru to the bed. "Let me massage it out."
He took off her shoe and sock and began to rub her foot. Michiru lay down on the bed.
"I like that."
"Hmm?" Haruka looked up.
"Your hands. They're good for massaging people. Did I ever tell you that I liked your hands?"
"Not that I can recall..." Haruka gave her a smile.
"I guess you know right now..."Michiru readjusted herself so that she could see Haruka. She gave her a smile. "You're such a wonderful person, Haruka. You are always there for me."
"I guess I could say the same for you..." Haruka's hands dropped. They two stared at each other's eyes for a few minutes as they reminisced of everything they had gone through together. As they did, they got closer, about to kiss.
As their lips were about to lock, however, a loud noise from the door jarred their minds back to the present. They looked over to see a package on the floor of the living room.
"What is that?" Haruka stood up and went over to the package. Michiru, meanwhile, put her shoe and sock back on and she too stood up.
Haruka turned the package over and found the address.
"What? Egg Base School?"
"Huh?" Michiru looked over Haruka's shoulder. "A school in that awful place? Even if he's dead, they should leave it alone."
"We've been accepted as students..." Haruka's face had a quizzical look.
"But we never even enrolled in a school. How..."
Another sound was heard in the hallway.
"Who's there?!" Haruka burst through the door, only to see the door to the stairs close.
"Haruka!" Michiru pointed to the elevator.
"Right!" Haruka entered the elevator. After a few minutes, she was in the main lobby of the apartment building, so she waited for the invader.
After thirty minutes, however, no one came out of any of the staircases.
Haruka's communicator suddenly beeped.
"Michiru?"
"He escaped."
"What?! How?"
"Through a window. In the staircase. It's completely punched out."
"But...wouldn't he have fallen..." Haruka, confused, went outside. She looked up. "Who was it?"
--------------------
Up in the red light, Mahjong reappeared in the room with the three shadows. She didn't look very happy.
"Cleona has failed miserably..." She snapped her fingers. "Melana!"
"Master?" Melana, a brunette who wore a red skin-tight body suit with thigh high cowboy boots and a gun, appeared. Around her neck was a collar with a heart on it. "I will help you get rid of the fox, and the two sailors."
"It seems that he might be easier to catch." Mahjong relpied. "It seems that, according to our feeler, he has been moved to that unusual floating city. There's a school there..."
"School?" Melana was happy. "I love killing little kids!"
"No. Not until we get what we want. You'll have to pretend to be a student."
"Do I?" Melana frowned.
"Yes."
"Dammit..." the two remining shadows chuckled as she talked to Mahjong.
"What are you laughing about?!"
"You have to get an education, Melana." one of the shadows chuckled. "You always were the stupid one."
"You...!" Melana turned red.
"Go, Melana." Mahjong said as she turned to the two shadows, who slithered away at her glance.
"Very well-"
"Wait. Take this with you." Mahjong handed Melana a jug.
"Oh...right!!" Melana understood.
"Now go."
"Very well, master!!" With that, Melana left the red light...
-----------------
"Well...here I am..." Tails looked up at the huge complex that he was about to enter.
"Don't worry..." Nathan said. "If you're sure you'll be all right..."
"I'll be fine." Tails replied.
"Okay then...In the meantime I will do something that I feel I am obliged to do."
"What?" Tails asked.
"I'm going to...join the city's Freedom Fighters!!"
Tails' eyes grew wide.
"Freedom Fighters?!"
"That's right."
"But how?!"
"Well..." Nathan lowered his voice. "I plan to ask Manic and Sonia.
They're Freedom Fighters, or something like that. Pretty cool, huh?"
Tails was shocked as he thought of it.
"Well, anyway, hope you have fun in school!!" Nathan ran off before Tails had a chance to reply.
"Hmph..." Tails went into the school. "At least Nathan is a good person.
He was good enough to show me how to get here. But..already I miss everyone...Sonic...Michiru...Rotor..."
He stopped. He blushed as he realized that he cared a lot for Michiru. He was about to turn to go to the main office when from the side something came at him.
"Think fast!"
"Huh?!" Tails was thrown onto the floor. Turning his head, he caught the instigator as it disappeared into the halls.
"Hey!" Tails looked to see an adult overlander female coming towards him.
"Are you all right?"
"I think so..." Tails looked at the woman. He looked over to his left. "I could have sworn..."
"Hmmm?" The overlander's eyes were somewhat quizzical.
"I thought..." Tails saw a crumpled piece of paper next to his hand. He carefully scooped it up. "I saw someone I knew. And...they came and hit me in between the eyes..."
"Well, don't worry." The female smiled. "Let's just get you to your rooms."
From behind, a shadow appeared, watching as the female and Tails left the lobby.
-------------------
Nathan walked into the Magic Cups shop.
"Hey, everyone..." Nathan came into an empty shop. "Okay, what is this...?"
"And now," he heard Sonia's voice. "An astonishing feat that will leave your senses paralyzed!!"
"Sonia?!" Manic's very scared voice was next heard. Nathan followed the sound into the freak show lounge, where Sonia had tied Manic to a post blindfolded.
"As you are about to see, Manic will defy all laws of logic!" Sonia announced. "These seven volunteers" she pointed as she said this, "are in fact snipers from the gun infantry of the national army. The best of their kind!" She passed out earphones to the audience, including Nathan, whom she gave an evil eye. "And now, at the count of three they will shoot Manic! All seven of them, excecution style!!"
"I get a last request, right?" Manic was uneasy.
"And I'm denying it on the grounds that you weren't specific. Now!!"
Sonia ordered. "Ready, aim..."
"Damn, my nose itches..." Manic muttered.
"FIRE!!!!!"
The sound was deafening as the bullets ripped through him. Everyone covered their eyes.
"Are those blanks?" someone nudged Nathan. "Or is he wearing a vest?"
"Are you nuts?" Nathan looked at the quail. "You're obviously new here, aren't you?"
"You mean..." the quail turned green. She quickly excused herself from the room.
Finally, the shots were finished. Manic was slumped, blood and bullet holes all over him. The ropes had been cut by the excessive gunfire. The crowd was silent. From another room Nathan heard the quail heaving. Suddenly, Manic's hand shot up. Everybody gasped as Manic's hand went up and scratched his nose vigorously.
"OH MY GOD!!!!" The people gasped. "He's alive?!"
The only person whose mouth wasn't open in complete shock was Nathan's.
Even the snipers were pale with surprise.
"See?" Sonia was beaming. "The world's most invinsible hedgehog!!"
"Okay..." Manic managed to croak out. "You owe me big time, Sonia..."
----------------------------------------
In his room, Tails sighed.
"Something's wrong..." The communicator lay on the bed. "I've called them, and they haven't responded..."
"Just use this to call us." Michiru handed Tails the communicator watch the second time they met, in front of Magic Cups. "Whenever you need help."
Later on, in Michiru's room, Tails had asked about the significance of the watch.
"I can call you whenever I want help?"
"That's right." Michiru had smiled. "I was told to give this one watch to one special person who could help us defend love and justice here on this planet."
"Who gave it to you?"
"I...don't know, really..." A confused look had passed over Michiru. "We just found them in our bags when we first came here. But, there's only one of them from me, so keep it safe. And remeber, if you need help, you can get us."
"What about just pleasant conversation?" Tails thought. "I wonder. They seem sad, almost like they are in mourning...they wear black somewhere within their clothing...why? Where do they come from?"
A knock on the door made Tails jump.
"Ahhhhhh!!!"
"Don't worry..."
The door opened, and Michiru and Haruka entered.
"Michiru!!!" Tails cried. He jumped into her arms. "You're here!! You're alive!!"
"Of course we are..." Haruka replied. "Why wouldn't we be?"
"I heard...there was a huge explosion at the center of the Egg Base."
"Why are you here?" Michiru asked.
"I guess I could ask you the same." Tails replied. He looked down at his watch. "Is there a new enemy here?"
"Actually..." Michiru looked troubled. "We're here because of something else...we don't even know who sent for us."
"You don't even know who sent for you?"
"No." Haruka replied. "You're here because of Sonic."
"What?!" Tails jumped back. "How did you know?!"
"Just a guess..." Haruka said silently.
"Well," Michiru went to the door. "I'd better check us both into the school."
A small noise caused Haruka's head to fly towards the window.
"WHO'S THERE?!"
"Waaaaaah!!!!" Tails jumped back.
"Haruka?!" Michiru grabbed Haruka's arm.
"Nothing. It was nothing."
Haruka and Michiru went to the door. As they left, Haruka's eye went toward the window.
The shadow jumped away from the window.
---------------------------------
"So, won't you tell us your name, miss?" The teacher cheerily asked.
"Of course." The overlander girl with short brown hair smiled. "My name is Melanie Wae. I'm a junior here."
"Wonderful, class!!" The overly happy teacher clapped. The apathetic class gave it's reply in the form of yawns, boos and hisses. "Now, Melanie, you can sit in the third row. Right there."
A red echidna sat to the right of Melanie's desk. To the front was a blonde overlander boy, and a green bird to the left. Melanie sat down.
"Now, class." The teacher began. "The elementary principle of quantum physics-"
"Boooooorrrrriiiiiinng." The overlander boy yawned. "When's lunch again?"
"Hey." The boy turned to face the red echidna. "There's people that are trying to learn."
"What's it to you?" The boy turned around.
"I'm just saying, I'm trying to learn, so please, shut your mouth."
"HEY!!!" The boy jumped up suddenly and flew over to the echidna's desk.
"Do you want to start something?"
"EXCUSE ME!!!" The boy turned to face the teacher. "Ahem. I'm trying to teach. Get out if you're going to disrupt the class!"
The boy, red-faced, turned and left.
"Hey," the red echidna heard some others whispering. "That guy's going to get it. That kid that just got sent out? He's so violent. He was in my school."
"I agree." Another person whispered. "That echidna is definitely dead when lunch comes around."
Melanie took out some cubes and fiddled with them.
"What monotonous talk," she thought. "These people aren't who I'm looking for. Oh well, like they said, there's always lunch..."
--------------------------------
In the hallways, Haruka and Michiru met at their lockers.
"What do you think?"
"What do I think?" Michiru opened her locker. "Haruka, I don't care about that right now. You're hiding something. What is it?"
"I can't tell you, Michiru." Haruka looked over to another hallway. "I just can't. Not until I'm sure of it."
"Fine." Michiru closed her locker.
"I can tell you that I've been having a strange feeling."
"You too?"
"What do you mean you too?"
"Ever since the news came yesterday..." Michiru closed her eyes. "It's been so strange. I've been hearing things in my head. Unusual things. What's more, the scent of sea water has reached me. The tide is changing."
"The same is with me." Haruka said.
"How so?"
"The wind..." Haruka's mind went back to her gym class that morning. "The wind picked up an hour ago. It brough a strange scent. It was so familiar to me, but I couldn't place where I had smelt it before." She looked at Michiru.
"Oh."
"What's wrong?"
"Your clothing." Michiru was wearing a pink shirt and blue pants. "You're not wearing..."
"I'm not?" Michiru looked down. "I might have thought I was wearing black. But, Haruka, you've stopped as well."
Haruka was wearing a blue turtleneck and blue jeans. Both girls looked at each other before walking on to their classes, deep in thought.
"All this time..." Haruka thought. "We have been thinking of Pluto...Setsuna... Now, has the morning come where we will forever renounce her memories? Are we accepting her death, not to expect her to return again? Or...what could it be?"
---------------------------------
At lunchtime, the boy waited patiently.
"He's got to be here soon."
"Yo." Another boy comes up to him. "Are you sure that Moebian's going to come?"
"Yeah." The boy rolled his eyes. "He's got to be stupid or something."
Finally, the red echidna came up. As he passed the boy stopped him.
"Hey, yo." The red echidna faced the boy.
In the shadows, over near the doors, Melana took out a cube.
"Over here." The cube was absorbed into one of the lunchroom's lamps.
"That way, these people will all die in a simple way."
Suddenly, Mahjong's voice filled Melana's head.
"What are you doing?"
"I have a different approach to our problem." Melana replied. "Cleona's
fatal mistake was to send weak monsters to directly attack the sailors. Well, if I can get power from these fool students before the monsters confront the sailors, it would be much easier to fight."
"Sounds interesting..." Mahjong nodded. "Very well. Proceed."
Back on the other side, the boy and the echidna were coming to a head.
"So, what is it you want?" the echidna asked. "I don't see the point in your feeble arguments."
"What I'm saying," the boy, getting more frustrated by the minute by the echidna's unwillingness to take bait, "is that you're a pompus ass!"
"My." the echidna said in a very amused tone. "I'm surprised that you even know what 'pompus' means."
"Why you-"
The boy jumped at the echidna.
"Fight! Fight! FIGHT!!" Out of nowhere a huge crowd of students suddenly crowded around, chanting.
Undaunted by the boy's flying attack, the echidna stepped out of the way.
The boy went crashing to the ground. He howled in pain.
"I don't deal with little punks." the echidna turned to leave. "I'd rather take my chances on people who can fight."
Suddenly, the lights blew up in the cafeteria, covering it in a blanket of darkness.
"What?!" Everyone began to panic. "What's going on?!"
The echidna's head whipped around to see the monster as it suddenly blasted the cafeteria.
-----------------------------------
Haruka's head snapped up in her class. She abruptly stood up and walked out.
A stinging sensation stung Michiru's chest. She ran out of the bathroom and met Haruka in the hall.
"An enemy?!"
Tails walked out of a classroom to see Haruka and Michiru run down the hall.
"Guys!!" he called as he used his tails to propel himself. "Wait for me!!"
Behind Tails, the red eyed woman stood.
----------------------------------
"Come on!!" The students were being electrocuted by the monster, which had tentacles. On its head was a light bulb. "Give your lives over to the Great One!!"
"Let's get out of here!!" A girl jumped towards the door. It was slammed in their faces by Melana, who smiled at them.
"Hello, students."
"Aaaaaaaahhhh!!!" The girl screamed.
"You've been selected by the Card Sharks to perform a task for us." The monster's tentacles wrapped around the girl and electrocuted her. "Now, let us see if any sailor should come!!"
Suddenly, a chair leg hit the monster square in the eyes.
"Hey, good-looking!!" The red echidna held the remains of the chair, ready to throw them. "Why don't you leave them alone and go against me?"
"Well, well." In the dark, Melana couldn't see too well. "Are you the sailor?"
"A sailor?" The voice was shocked. "Actually..."
"Looking for us?"
A door was thrown open, revealing Uranus and Neptune.
"If you are, look no further." Neptune looked at the monster. "I will cleanse this school with the soothing rythym of the sea. For elegance, Sailor Neptune!"
"You are an unholy demon who desires to spread fear!" Uranus crossed her arms. "The skys will open and serve a terrible fate to you! For magnificence, Sailor Uranus!"
"Well, well," Melana laughed. "That's some nice poetry, but can you defeat me and my monsters? It may have been to defeat pathetic Cleona, but you're now dealing with me."
"You knew Cleona!" The two soldiers jumped forward. "Who are you!!"
"I have no time to deal with you. Tonguesten, get rid of these soldiers!!" the girl disappeared.
"You got it, boss!!" The monster turned around to face the sailors.
Tails entered the cafeteria, huffing.
"Gosh, you guys are fast!!"
"What?!" The two turned around.
The monster used the confusion to it's advantage and it opened it's mouth. It's tongue shot out and knocked Uranus and Neptune over.
"Ow!!" Neptune grabbed her arm.
"Heheh..." The monster's tongue went back into its mouth. "My mouth is full of voltage! Gets a good charge when I use my tongue."
"Guys!!" Tails ran to them.
"Ooooh, the fox too!! Get a load of this!!" The tongue lashed out at Tails.
"TAILS!!" Uranus screamed.
Tails dodged the tongue and flipped over the monster, to everyone's surprise.
"What?!" The monster turned around, only to have it's face kicked by Tails, who was flying.
"Why don't you leave us alone!!" Tails shouted.
"Heheh..." the monster smirked. It lashed out its tongue, but this time it went into a circuit plug nearby.
"Huh? What's it doing?" Uranus stood up. "World Shaking!"
The attack went to the monster but has no effect.
"What?!" Uranus couldn't believe it.
"Hey, it's my turn mow, sailor girl! Get a load of my special moves!" she turned to Tails. "Not even you can resist this!!
Its tentacles suddenly grabbed Uranus and Neptune, swinging them up to the ceiling.
"Aaaah!!" Neptune squeaked.
"Neptune! Uranus!!"
"Now, surrender or the sailors die!" The tentacles started to choke the two. "Hand over what you have!"
"Huh?" Tails suddenly looked confused.
"Don't be stupid, boy!" The monster held out its hand. "Hand it over now!"
"No problem."
Suddenly, the red echidna flew out of nowhere and slammed the monster into a nearby wall. The speed that it was thrown caused the monster to black out. It let go of Uranus and Neptune. They fell to the floor, coughing.
"You guys!!" Tails ran over to them. "You're alive!!"
"Uh...Tails..." Uranus gasped.
"Hey!" The three looked over to the red echidna. "You two had better destroy this thing before it revives again!"
"Huh?" Neptune looked over to the monster. "How?"
"It runs on electricity." Tonguesten woozily started to stand up, though it's light bulb was cracked. "If you can attack it with water, it won't be able to fight off your attacks!"
"I see..." Neptune nodded.
Over in the corner, the monster rubbed its head.
"Oh...my head...where is that rat? He'll pay for doing that to meee..."
"Deep Submerge!" The monster turned around to see the water attack coming at her. Having no time to react, she was immersed in water, and it caused her to malfunction, electrocuting herself as she did.
"World Shaking!" Uranus pounded the ground.
"Aaaah...AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!" Tonguesten screamed as it was ripped to shreds.
The lights came back on in the cafeteria, and the doors swung open, no longer controled by electric circuit. The two sailors looked at each other as they scanned the damage of the room.
"Woah, incredible..." Uranus couldn't believe it.
Tables and chairs were strewn everywhere. Hundreds of students lay on the ground, unconcsious.
"Hey..." Neptune turned to see the red echidna open a window. "Wait!"
"Huh?" The red echidna stopped, but didn't turn around.
"Who are you?" Neptune walked over to him. "You saved our lives."
"Oh, it was nothing..."
"Nothing?!" Tails leaped over to him. "Why it was ever-"
He stopped. The red echidna turned and looked at Tails in surprise. Tails looked at his face, now that the room wasn't dark, and gasped in surpise. He took a few steps back.
"Knuckles!!"
"Huh?!" The two sailors gasped.
"Tails?" Knuckles stared at him. "What are you doing here?"
"I'd like to ask the same about you! You've been missing! Why are you here in Creecreeopolis?" Tails was shocked. He looked down at Knuckles' wrist. "Oh my god!"
Knuckles wore a watch communicator similar to Tails', only it was red.
"Where did you get that?"
"I...uh..." Knuckles broke out in a sweat.
"Hey!" Tails turned to the two sailors, slightly mad. "I thought you told me that you only gave out one of these!"
"I did. You mean..." Neptune saw the watch as well. "But that's
impossible!"
"I didn't give out my watch." Uranus looked up. "And you gave yours to Tails. So who had that one?"
Outside, the sun was starting to shine on the school. The red eyed woman walked by the school as she looked up to the cafeteria window of the building,
To be continued...
